Itsukushima Shrine is a rare shrine in Japan where wooden buildings are lined up in the sea of the cove with the island of the Seto Inland Sea in the background.
The structure of the shrine began in the 12th century, but it was burnt down and rebuilt in 1241.
The beautiful natural scenery of Itsukushima's lush forests approaching the coastline has long been praised as one of the "Three Views of Japan".
Registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1996, it is an excellent building that conveys Japan's unique culture, and is highly regarded for its cultural landscape as a whole.
